Records
may have three stages of life: active, semi-active, and inactive.
These stages vary greatly in importance and life span in years.
Active
records are those currently in use by a business process.
Semi-active
records are records that are referred to as less than an active
record but are still considered valuable enough to keep on-site in
filing systems.
Inactive
records are those that are maintained for long periods of time for
legal, regulatory or sound business practice. Those records are kept
in boxes off-site in a records storage facility (archive) for a
specific length of time, usually years, covered by the corporate
retention program.
